You’re gonna think this is silly.

But as you might already know, one of my least favorite things to do in the world is fly.

Yeah, I still do it. With a single bead of sweat running down the side of my face. And images of fast-approaching bodies of water or the side of an icy mountain running through my head. But I still get it done.

Hey, wait! Before you fire off an email to tell me how I’m safer in a plane than I am driving down the freeway, hear me out.

I get it. I know that the odds of me ever going down in an airplane are 1 in 11 million. It’s super rare. Probably not gonna happen. Chill the F out, Sean. Heard it all before.

Then again, I imagine quite a few of these same folks lecturing me on airplane safety (and the reported 1 in 11,000,000 odds) are the ones playing the lottery every week, although their chances of winning the jackpot are somewhere around 1 in 155,223,510.

Who’s being silly now? 🙂

Some of life’s experiences are indeed rare. The overwhelming majority of us will land wheels-down on a runway every time, waste gosh-know-how-many dollars on Powerball, and take a walk in the middle of a storm while carrying our golf clubs and never be struck by lightning.

(By the way, the odds of being struck by lightning in any given year are 1 in 1,083,000.)

But what about life itself? While we’ll go to great lengths to present mathematical arguments for the rarities of life, we seldom consider how rare WE are.

What are the odds of your existence?

Well, a team of really smart people went through the entire history of the world — taking into account the wars, famines, plagues, etc. — and calculated the odds of YOU arriving on this Earth on the day you did, with the parents you have, and the DNA you’ve got.

So let’s play a game .…

1 in 1,000,000? Nope.

1 in 1,000,000,000? Nooooooope.

1 in 1,000,000,000,000? Um, not that one either.

You know what, I’ll let Mel Robbins reveal the answer and let you in on the frickin’ MIRACLE THAT YOU ARE on today’s episode of The Quote of The Day Show.

How’s that for a cliffhanger?
