Sometimes tragedy inspires transformation.

For Dr. Leo Buscaglia, a Special Education professor at USC, tragedy came in the form of a student’s suicide.

The loss of his student stunned her professor, who said he would scan the auditorium for her “kind eyeballs” while giving his lectures.

Moved to do more to acknowledge the human being-ness of the student body, Dr. Buscaglia developed a non-credit course called Love 1A.

He taught his students to love themselves and others, including the 10% whose hearts seem so full of hate. Because they’re the ones who need it the most.

Love 1A eventually became a manuscript, which ultimately became a bestselling book, simply titled LOVE.

Dr. Buscaglia went on to spread his message of love well beyond the lecture halls of USC. The world became his classroom, as he became one of the most sought-after motivational speakers, the leading money earner on PBS, and the author of a dozen books.

As the saying goes: “It’s not what happens; it’s what you do with it.”

Today on the podcast, Leo Buscaglia, also known as Dr. Love, shares a powerful truth about love and the 10%, or what we call the haters.
