This was maybe 5 years ago.
I was at the top of my game in the online health space — Top 10 podcast, hugely popular YouTube channel, creator of the JERF (Just Eat Real Food) movement, host of some of the very best online summit events.
You know, healing the world, making it a better place and stuff.
Then, one day I see an article come across my Facebook feed …
The 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness
Over the years my name had landed on quite a few of these “listicles.” But this particular list was THEE listicle. It was the official listicle.
To me it wasn’t a matter of if I made the list but whether or not I made the Top 50.
So I clicked the link.
I scrolled through the Top 20, slightly perplexed by what some of these folks had to do with Health and Fitness. But whatevs.
I kept scrolling … down to 40 … 60 … 80 … seriously? … 100.
I didn’t make the list.
The only place I found my name was in the comments section, where people were asking how it was possible that I didn’t make the list.
As much as I’d like to tell you that in that very moment I realized that I didn’t need public recognition, that my service to the world wasn’t about making a stupid list, I can’t.
Because I … was … PISSED.
I know, it’s all ego — that thing that the “spiritual masters” say I should be able to break, dissolve, silence, overcome, shed, and detach from.
But is that really sound advice or even a realistic intention?
Can we ever really lose our egos?
I don’t think so. Everyone has an ego, even the spiritual masters among us. It’s not about losing it, but having the awareness to drop it when it surfaces. But as we know, it’s not always easy.
On today’s episode of The Quote of The Day Show, find out what Dr. Wayne Dyer’s ego had to say he stumbled upon his ranking on the list of The Top 100 Most Spiritually Influential People Alive. You might be surprised.
