He was like my second dad.

Full of all kinds of wisdom typically imparted through stories. Usually the same stories over and over again. But repetition is the mother, father, sister, and second cousin of learning, right?

Pay yourself first, Sean.

Finish what you start.

If she doesn’t reach over to unlock your door, don’t take her on another date. 🙂

But the best counsel my late Uncle Robert gave me was this:

“If you want to figure out what you want to do for a living, Sean, you have to find out what you don’t want to do.”

That’s how you discover what you love. It’s how you find more than a job. You find your mission.

Finding our life’s work can feel like such a daunting task. It’s paralyzing. Precludes us from making a choice. Because there’s a really good chance that it might be the wrong choice.

Then again, it’s better to make the wrong choice than to make no choice at all. When we experience what’s not for us, it brings us one step closer to what is.

Plus, in hindsight every job we don’t exactly love affords us a skill that can be used when we eventually do find our mission. It’s all about how we look at it.

I didn’t wake up one day and land in my dream job. I dug holes, painted dorm rooms, cleaned toilets, checked out VHS tapes, sold bootleg hip-hop CDs, and personal trained my way to it.

I Uncle Robert-ed my way here.

(Fist bump to Heaven)

This week on The Quote of The Day Show, our theme is finding your true calling, your mission, even if you’re a multi-passionate person, or what Emilie Wapnick calls a “multipotentialite.”

It’s not always as simple as deciding what you would do if money weren’t an issue. Because, let’s be honest, money is an issue.

If you missed Emilie’s talk yesterday, check it out here. On today’s episode, Celeste Headley reminds us that dream jobs are much more that just a job title, and that the only way to find your dream job is by trying new things and making mistakes.

You Uncle Robert that sh*t.
