I’m kinda on the fence about this one.

If you haven’t heard by now, Equinox, the luxury gym chain, kept it hella real with the New Year’s resolutions crowd.

Maybe too real.

On the morning of January 1st, after ringing in the new year with white truffle omelets and sprouted cucumber toast, Equinox management Scotch-taped signs to their front doors that read in part:

You are not a New Year’s resolution.

Your life doesn’t start at the beginning of the year.

And that’s not what being part of Equinox is about.

We don’t speak January, and neither do you.

In other words, your “New Year, New Me” emotional money is not welcome here today. We will not tolerate you hogging a bench press for 20 minutes or doing biceps curls in our squat racks while our core members wait. You will not crash our year-round fitness party with another one of your annual 13-day body transformation binges. If you’re really serious about getting in shape, come back tomorrow. But today we’ll take a hard pass on signing you up for a membership.

Does it have an air of snobbery to it?

Well, yeah.

Would I have written that note and taped it to the door?

Absolutely not.

But, at the same time …

I understand.

Setting aside the fact that an Equinox membership starts at $200/month and that for most people it’s probably a better idea to roll with the $10 “no-commitments” deal at Planet Fitness for a month or two before breaking the bank … I kinda get where they’re coming from.

Coincidentally, today’s QOD episode broaches the same topic, as Dr. Dennis Kimbro, a college professor, reveals why every student on campus knows which office is his.

It’s because, like Equinox, Dr. Kimbro has a sign on his door as well.

His sign reads:

If You Don’t Want to Work Hard, Then You Don’t Belong Here.

In other words, your victim story is not welcome here. I will not tolerate you holding back those students who are here to work hard and earn their grades. You will not crash this party with your in-class antics, worn-out excuses, and general lack of discipline. You will not drag us down. If you don’t want to work hard, we don’t want you in our classroom.

I assume that’s the gist of what Equinox was saying.

We’re a serious gym. We work hard here, January thru December. Short-lived resolutions aren’t what we do. If you’re committed to making this a long-term lifestyle, this is your gym. If not, they have a $10 “no-commitments” deal at Planet.

They just muffed the punt a bit.

As I wrote in Monday’s post, when it comes to our 2023 goals and resolutions, we can all use some real talk. Equinox talk. A healthy dose of reality, even if it feels a little cringe.

The reality is, accomplishing your resolution this year is gonna be HARD AF — physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually hard.

If you don’t want to put in the hard work, if you want to play make-believe for another year, if you’re gonna do curls in the squat rack for a couple weeks … then yeah, New Year, Same You.

I know, I’m supposed to be more positive this time of year. However, I no longer speak January.

Like Dr. Kimbro and this week’s QOD speakers, I’d much rather discuss real things like discipline, consistency, and commitment. Three things you’re gonna need if you want to win the 2023 resolution game.
